UNHCR calls on Europe to vaccinate refugees and displaced people

Geneva, Apr 7 (Prensa Latina) The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Europe on Wednesday called on European countries to ensure refugees and displaced people’s access to Covid-19 vaccines.
Through a statement, High Commissioner of that UN organization, Filippo Grandi, described the unequal policies when sharing vaccines as counter-productive and narrow-minded.

So far, 153 countries across the globe have included refugees in their vaccination strategies, but the availability of vaccines and the limited capacity of healthcare systems is a great challenge in many cases, the text states.

Some 85 percent of refugees in the world live in developing countries, which hinders their immunization and requires international aid, the statement adds.

Grandi congratulated nations such as Rwanda, Jordan, Serbia and Nepal, on their work to include that risk population in their vaccination campaigns.
