Amazon distribution facility to open in Orland – Chico Enterprise-Record

ORLAND — A new Amazon facility will be opening in Orland within a year, the company announced in a press release Thursday.

Amazon, the online marketplace, will open a delivery station within Orland Airport Industrial Park, the 65-acre park located near the Orland Airport. According to Amazon, the purpose of the site is to help speed up deliveries for Glenn County customers and those in surrounding areas. There are currently over 250 Amazon delivery stations located in the United States.

“Packages can be delivered quicker to our outlier areas by creating more of a central hub away from the metropolitan areas,” said Scott De Moss, administrative officer of Glenn County. “It’s a pretty good opportunity to see increases in employment for our Orland Airport Industrial Park.”

The facility, which is about 75,000-square feet, will bring about 100 to 150 full and part-time jobs to the area. Amazon says wages will start at $15 an hour and offer medical, dental and 401k benefits.

“In our community we are very sensitive and concerned that we do things that are beneficial to the people that live here but also it’s the more rural way of life,” De Moss said. “We see that the expansion to our industrial park partners those ideas together. We’re really excited and hopeful.”

De Moss said he’s optimistic that Amazon’s move into Glenn County will help provide a boost to the businesses in Orland. If more people are working in the Orland area, that allows for more people to eat in local restaurants and stimulate the local economy, De Moss said.

The county doesn’t own the building that Amazon will be taking over, De Moss said. However, because the owner made structural improvements and added a parking lot that had cost millions of dollars, De Moss said the county amended the owner’s lease.

“We did amend their lease to give them six years with a  50 percent lease reduction based on their expenses and another six years of 25 percent lease reduction,” De Moss said. “We see the site get developed so there’s value in that and also as the value of the property goes up, so does the property tax which then comes back to the taxpayer.”

Amazon’s Delivery Service Partner program will also be available. The program allows for local entrepreneurs to create a “last-mile delivery business” to deliver Amazon packages within the area. Basically, anyone who wants to participate can start their delivery business with as little as $10,000 and Amazon can provide the training. “The opportunity for Glenn County to site an Amazon Distribution Facility is a win for the county and the region with the creation of new jobs and the associated ancillary economic benefits,” said Keith Corum, chairman of the Glenn County Board of Supervisors in the release.
