Convert Widdifield into a health facility for ALC patients

To the editor:

When patients occupy a bed in a hospital and do not require the intensity of services provided in that care setting, the patient is designated alternate level of care (ALC) at that time by their physician.

Since the North Bay Regional Health Centre:

• Looks after ALC patients (as it has in the past) and will need to continue until there is a viable alternative to properly care for ALC patients

• Is currently running low on beds because of the current structure in the main hospital

Why not purchase the vacant Widdifield Secondary School property and convert it into a high-quality facility for ALC patients?

This would improve overall patient flow, reduce surgical backlogs and improve access to timely care for all patients.
