Arcata High School graduate and drummer Chris Hesse has reached a significant milestone with his Grammy-nominated Hoobastank bandmates, reaching over 700 million YouTube streams of their 2004 smash-hit and music video “The Reason.”
To put that into local perspective, Eureka export and Grammy-winner Sara Bareilles’ top video “Brave” has over 110 million streams and Eureka export Mike Patton has reached over 24 million streams of “Epic” with his Faith No More bandmates.
“I’m from 2050 and I still listen to this song,” reads one top comment on the ‘Reason video.
Chris was born in Willow Creek and graduated from Arcata High in the early ‘90s, a friendly guy who still visits the area from time to time.
A couple of years after graduating he headed to the southern end of the state and started responding to drummer-wanted ads, meeting fellow Hoobastank bandmates, and forming bonds over their appreciation of Mr. Bungle and Faith No More among others.
”I would say I thrived — I had a stellar upbringing,” Chris told this reporter while he was working at the Times-Standard. “I really enjoyed growing up in Humboldt and I honestly would not change a thing.”
Mr. Bungle tops a Billboard chart, an export reaches 700 million YouTube streams of his music video, COVID-safe businesses get props, Jared Huffman and AOC agree, a new Netflix arrival honors an HSU alum, a Colbert performance, BBC and PBS look at local tribal efforts, a positive billboard for Ferndale, a guilty verdict in a Rio Dell murder, a COVID spike, outdoorsiness, mug shots, and more.
