BizHawk: Good Space Coworking in Goleta Offers Home Office Away from Home | Business

Clarissa Garcia needed a quiet space away from home so she could study. She’s taking the MCAT soon in hopes of getting into medical school.

“I have been studying at home, but there are so many distractions,” Garcia said. “It is kind of hard for me to focus. I need a nice, quiet space.”

So Garcia started visiting Good Space Coworking, a shared office workspace at 320 Storke Road, Suite 101 in Goleta.

The area near the Target Shopping Center was founded by Mika Silverman, an IT professional who wanted to bring together people with a common need.

“I started Good Space because there are so many amazing professionals who work from home in Goleta,” she said.

She launched the company in February.

“There’s somebody working from home on every block in Goleta,” Silverman said. “Amazing professionals doing incredible things, and I wanted the opportunity to network and get together with those people.”

Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

“This has been really hard,” she said. “We pivoted quite a bit. Our focus was going to be on really bringing together industry people.”

Since meetings couldn’t be held at the site, the company had to change to fit new demands. Silverman is renting offices by the day.

“People say, you know, ‘I just need a day away from my kids,'” Silverman said.

In addition, UCSB students use the drop-in desk with WiFi.

“We never really intended to market to the student population, but without libraries, they have been desperate for a place where they could focus,” Silverman said. “Instead of being the network center, we have become the quiet retreat.”

She said the most popular use right now is a husband and wife sharing an office or a parent looking to escape from working at home to be in an office for a day.

Private offices are available for $50 a day, $200 a week and $800 a month. Drop-in is $20 a day or $200 a month.

Silverman is a graduate of San Marcos High School and UCSB and has lived in Goleta since 2003.

“I think 2021 is going to be incredible for Good Space,” Silverman said. “As we figure out how to navigate safely meeting, Good Space is going to be here for people to safely do that.”

Kyle’s Kitchen Expands

Kyle’s Kitchen has replaced Silvergreens in Isla Vista.

“In order to simplify our lives and streamline operations in the midst of this pandemic, we opted to transition Silvergreens into Kyle’s IV,” said Jay Ferro, founder of Silvergreens and Kyle’s Kitchen.

Silvergreens closed in March at the start of the pandemic.

Kyle’s IV still has the seared ahi salad and some of the other salad dishes that Silvergreens offered.

Kyle’s IV’s brioche buns are made from scratch daily, and the hand-cut fries are made fresh from Kennebec potatoes, along with grass-fed beef and all-natural free-range chicken, according to a news release.

The restaurant has an outdoor patio and large open windows that allow for natural airflow, and breezes keep the air flowing.

Kyle’s IV is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 pm for dine-in, online orders, delivery, curbside pickup, takeout and via third-party delivery services. 

Transient Occupancy Taxes Down

Hotel bed taxes continue to drop in Santa Barbara.

The City of Santa Barbara received $4.84 million in sales tax revenue during the quarter that ended June 30, a 15% drop from the same quarter last year.

City officials blame the drop on the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition, the State of California provided relief to many small businesses by extending the third-quarter deadline to file sales tax returns from April until July and allowing some small businesses to spread those payments over the ensuing 12 months.

For the end of the 2020 fiscal year, sales taxes finished at $21.2 million, below the sales tax projected budget of $23.8 million.

Santa Barbara Couny’s financial report for the first fiscal quarter of 2021 said property tax, sales tax and cannabis tax were all on track, but transient occupancy tax revenues were about $1.9 million lower than expected, a result of people traveling less and the Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore remaining closed.
