Belarus has to repeat its presidential election, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the UK and the US have stated after OSCE recognised the election as rigged, US broadcaster Radio Free Europe reports.
The independent report by OSCE presented on Thursday, November 5, to OSCE’s Permanent Council called on Belarus to «organize new genuine presidential elections based on international standards,» saying the August 9 vote was not transparent as well as neither free nor fair.
It also denounced «systematic» human rights violations committed by Belarus’s security forces in response to the peaceful postelection protests and pointed to the climate of impunity for the perpetrators.
According to Radio Free Europe, British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab commented that it was «essential that its recommendations are carried out & fresh elections held». US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on the Belarusian authorities to «cease their crackdown and heed the demands of the Belarusian people for free and fair elections under independent observation.»
