ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The city of Albuquerque Department of Senior Affairs never stopped supporting Bernalillo County seniors by providing hundreds of thousands of meals, wellness check-ins, transportation, care coordination and more during the pandemic.
Thanks to technology, bingo, dances and more will be back for seniors.
“The ongoing pandemic has made a significant impact on older adults in Albuquerque and this is just another way we are working to support seniors,” said Anna Sanchez, Director of Senior Affairs. “We are bringing some of our most popular programs and events online, including senior dances and bingo, in an effort to provide socialization, education and fun opportunities for those in our community who are looking for more connection.”
Sanchez said seniors can tune into Facebook, YouTube and GOV-TV (Comcast channel 16) to get back to some of their favorite senior community programming in a virtual, COVID-safe way.
The online and television-based programs include virtual presentations, fitness videos, Facebook bingo, and even senior dances with live music.
Each month, residents can tune into GOV-TV (Comcast channel 16) to watch “Daytime Dancing with Senior Affairs,” a televised senior dance that features live music and socially distanced dancing by two couples.
“These shows help bring the popular senior dances into the living rooms of residents,” Sanchez said.
All senior dances observe COVID-safe practices, including inviting couples, keeping anyone not from the same household six feet apart and requiring masks.
The most recent show aired Oct. 10, but is posted GOV-TV’s YouTube channel.
Every two weeks, Senior Affairs will host bingo on Facebook live, with the next bingo sessions taking place at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 28.
Those interested in participating can pick up bingo cards from any of the five pick-up meal sites between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. the Monday before live BINGO or can email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information. Then, tune into Facebook.com/cabqseniors on the designated date and time to play. Prizes will be awarded to winners.
Each week, both the Senior Affairs Facebook page and YouTube channel will be updated with videos on a range of topics, including fitness, health and how-to’s. Visit cabq.gov/seniors for more information on upcoming events.
