Sudbury-born singer-songwriter Justine Giles has been selected as a finalist in Jim Beam’s Virtual Talent Search.
Giles is actually representing the city of Calgary this year and was invited to record her live music video at the National Music Centre/Studio Bell.
She chose to film a song that she originally wrote in Sudbury; stay tuned to see what single it is, organizers said.
The video will premiere on Oct. 14 and will then be open to receiving online votes.
Fans are invited to vote for their favourite band/artist to play live at the Jim Beam INDIES in 2021 at www.indies.ca.
Voting closes Nov. 3.
“The synergy between the song, the lyrics, the voice and overall aesthetic is so compelling and, what’s more, seems so natural,” Andrew King, Canadian Musician Magazine, said about Giles. “I love the depth of the lyrics here — that she can frame a ‘typical’ love song in such a way that it’s engaging even after repeat listens and never comes off as forced or hokey or clichéd.
“If this one song is any indication, I think she’s the total package and see a lot of potential in this artist.”
Giles says her musical influences range from Sarah McLachlan and Sheryl Crow, to Alanis Morissette.
She appeared on The Marilyn Denis show on CTV in February. This was her national television debut, though Giles has been on various local shows. The episode featured an at-home interview with the songstress discussing her career growth, as well as style evolution.
Giles released her debut album in Sudbury in 2014 and later left to pursue various career opportunities in Montreal, Toronto and, most recently, Calgary.
As for the contest, Canadian Music Week has announced the Jim Beam National Talent Search Tour will take place virtually Oct. 13 to Oct. 20, with 30-minute episodes spotlighting five bands from eight Canadian cities.
Hosted by Josie Dye of Indie88 Radio, each of the resulting regional webisodes will be streamed via Indies.ca and cmw.net/music, plus
Vimeo and YouTube, as well as partnering radio stations across the country.
The 40 bands have already recorded socially-distanced studio sessions, which will be edited so each indie artist or group will sound their best and shine online. All 40 artists will also receive a master tape of the multi-track sound recording and the accompanying multi-camera video to be used in any way they wish to promote themselves.
