A diverse group of private and industry aircraft will be flying to the Mayerthorpe Airport as one of eight stops as part of an aviation celebration.

On Aug. 8, Edmonton and area pilots will fly over Villeneuve, Dratyon Valley, Wetaskiwin, Josephburg, Westlock, Camrose, Forestburg and Mayerthorpe/Barrhead. The group will include air racers, helicopters, float planes and other unique aircraft.

Shane Getson, the MLA for Lac Ste. Anne-Parkland, will be a part of the air tour flying his own aircraft.

The tour is expected to fly into Mayerthorpe around 2:30 p.m. where a ceremony will be held to unveil the new name of the airport to Peter Trynchy Airfield.

Each community the tour is stopping in is encouraged to showcase their airport facilities and community in whichever way they want. For example, Sturgeon County is offering food and refreshments during the show and shine they have planned. Drayton Valley is hosting a mini trade show.

The air tour has about 25 aircraft signed up as part of the tour. The tour is to raise awareness of the local aviation community and presented by Outlaw Air Racing.

Anyone who plans to watch the tour fly into Mayerthorpe is asked to follow COVID-19 guidelines by practicing social distancing, wearing masks if you can’t and using hand sanitizer.
