A campaign uniting 7,000 arts professionals has written a letter to culture minister Caroline Dinenage calling for freelancers to be included in the government’s £1.57 billion support package for the arts.
The grassroots #OneVoiceCampaign, which had 7,000 people sign its initial statement of campaign values, is behind the call to action.
Nearly 1,000 supporters of the campaign have emailed the letter to Dinenage in less than 24 hours.
Choir conductor and co-founder of the #OneVoiceCampaign, Sam Evans, said: “A lifeline is still needed for performing arts freelancers.
“We urge the government to make clear that they will welcome cultural institutions including support for their network of freelancers in the forthcoming bids.
“Without it, many will leave the arts forever – and there is no future for our cultural crown jewels, let alone community arts provision, without the freelance workforce, their skills and experience. A lead from the government will be life-changing for many if they act today.”
