What recruiters are looking for in fully remote candidates
Recruiters want to know that you have experience with remote work experience. “Make note of any previous remote work experience on your resume and discuss your productivity and efficiency,” Reynolds says.
If you’ve been working remotely during the pandemic, explain on your resume and cover letters that you’ve been incredibly productive during this challenging time. “You may have additional responsibilities like child or family care, homeschooling or added burdens of having a partner who is an essential worker, and you’ve been able to maintain your productivity through it all,” Reynolds says. “Let the employer imagine how well you’ll do as a long-term remote worker without all those added distractions and challenges!”
Be confident in your ability to work from home when you’re discussing this arrangement, and have specific examples of times when you’ve thrived working independently, with little supervision, solving problems, completing projects or handling client interactions.
In addition, “stress that you’re an honest, trustworthy and communicative professional with excellent written and verbal communication skills,” Reynolds says.
Displaying your tech skills can also help give you an edge. Create a “Technology” section on your resume where you list the programs and tools you’re familiar with that are common with remote and distributed work: online chat programs like Slack, web and video conferencing tools like Zoom, and file sharing and collaboration platforms like Google Drive (Google Docs, Sheets, etc.).
Remote collaboration tools: Zoom, Google Chat, Hangouts, GoToMeeting, SharePoint, GoToWebinar, Dropbox
Document software: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Google Drive (Docs, Sheets, Slides)
Additional: Salesforce, ADP, Jira,
Adopting new technology quickly and independently.
How to address a gap in employment due to the pandemic
If it makes sense for your situation, you can include your employment gap directly in the experience section on your resume, Reynolds suggests. Example:
ACTIVE CAREER BREAK | FULLY REMOTE 03/2020 – Present
Virtual Office, Georgia
– One of multiple people laid off as a result of the pandemic
– Proactively pursuing certifications within an online format in QuickBooks 2019 and Microsoft Office
How to decide if this opportunity is a smart, long-term move
With so many unknowns about might follow the pandemic, it’s wise to select a company that you feel confident could stand a fair chance at weathering future economic downturns. Do a keyword search online (company name + COVID19, coronavirus, etc.), or research the company’s press/PR pages to see if the company has made any announcements or public statements about their response to the pandemic. “This will often tell you how well they’ve managed through this criss and their overall longer-term outlook,” Reynolds says.
You can also look for the following when gathering additional information: direct mentions of hiring pauses, layoffs, freezes, and any notable changes in a company’s business operations. Also decide whether the company is in an industry that will be busier or less busy in this economic environment. For example, FlexJobs recently highlighted 15 career fields that have increased their job openings during the pandemic.
